Frequently Asked Questions
2016 High School Boys Program

1. Who is eligible to play? Are there tryouts? Is there more than one team?

Any boy attending Gig Harbor High School is eligible to play. Boys who have never played lacrosse are welcome; however, most of the boys have been participating in our youth program for a number of years. We do not hold try outs. We will again field two teams, a varsity team and a JV team. The varsity team will be the most competitive. The roster and playing time will be based on the players' demonstrated skill level and game IQ. The JV team will be more focused on player development and balanced playing time.

2. Who will coach the program?

Coach Marc Kemp serves as the head coach for the boys high school program.  Coach Kelly Bland is the JV head coach. Parent volunteers will have the opportunity to support the team in roles such as sideline manager, timer, scorekeeper, and team parent.

3. When does the season begin and end?

Practice starts February 29, 2016 and the season runs through the end of May.  Practices are Monday through Friday in the evenings, usually 6:30 or 7:00 until 8:30 or 9:00. There will be one or two Saturday practices in the first two weeks, typically in the morning. Games are held Monday through Friday in the evening. There may be one or two Saturday games.

4. What other teams do we play?

We are part of the Washington Boys High School Lacrosse Association ( There are two Divisions, and we currently play in Division I in the SPSL/Narrows Conference. We compete against Vashon, Stadium, Bellarmine, South Kitsap, Klahowya, North Kitsap, and Port Angeles. We have an annual rivalry game, the Baggataway Bowl, against Peninsula High School. We also schedule games against teams in other conferences, typically in the Olympic Conference.

5. Where are practices and games played? Is there team transportation?

Practice and home games have been primarily at Peninsula High School with the occasional practice and game at Gig Harbor High School. But field space is very limited, so locations are subject to change. Away games include locations such as Port Orchard, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Port Angeles, Tacoma, Auburn, Puyallup, Seattle. We do not have a bus, so players are responsible for arranging their own transportation.

6.  What equipment do players need?

Players provide their own equipment. The following equipment is required of every player:  lacrosse helmet (black), lacrosse stick (crosse), shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves (must be team gloves), mouth guard (cannot be white or clear), athletic cup, and cleats (no metal cleats).  Players without required equipment will not be allowed to practice or participate in games. If you have any questions about equipment, please contact Coach Marc Kemp.

Players buy their uniforms, which the club will order. Uniforms include a home and an away jersey; home and away shorts; a practice pinny; and helmet decals. Budget about $250  for the uniform package. Players will need to wear the team glove, which the club will order during registration. If the player does not already have a pair of team gloves, please budget $100-$150 for the gloves.

8.  Are physicals required?  Are new concussion forms required?
